Yuji has eaten a total of 15 fingers in the anime. He ate the first finger during the incident in Sugisawa High School and the second one as part of a test by Gojo. The third and fourth ones were eaten by Sukuna without Yuji’s consent after the fight with the Finger Bearer at Eishu Juvenile Detention Center and after the battle at Yasohachi Bridge, respectively.

During the Shibuya Incident arc, an unconscious Yuji was then forced to eat his fifth finger by Mimiko and Nanako Hasaba. After they were found by Jogo, the curse then forced the still-unconscious Yuji to eat the remaining 10 Fingers, all of which were in his possession.

As revealed in the manga’s 222nd chapter, Sukuna has eaten 19 of his fingers, as well as his mummified corpse (which according to him, makes up for the cursed energy stored in the remaining finger), before starting his battle with Gojo. I’ve made it no secret that I found the manga to be somewhat lacking when compared to the anime. This isn’t always the case, as series like Berserk and many other manga are brilliant when put to the page, with their anime often falling short. But the cinematic execution of this finale, the music, the fiery voice acting, and the emotional storytelling are burned into my brain for this finale.

From Eren’s harrowing lament within his causality loop about how he will never get to truly be with Mikasa, to Levi’s powerful emotional tribute to his fallen comrades as their visages faded, the anime felt superior here. So many of these scenes were in the manga, but with cases like Mikasa’s ghoulish kiss sending Eren off into the afterlife, it feels perfunctory when seeing it in the manga. The movie-length finale was stirring, and deeply sad.

Closing Thoughts on the Attack on Titan Anime

This feels like the end of an era, closing the book on the era that got me back into anime as a fan. Attack on Titan was initially animated by WIT Studio, and then by MAPPA, two anime studios renowned for their exceptional quality. The series continued to blow my mind when put on the screen. However, it was in the years between Seasons 1 and 2 of the anime that I initially lost interest in the series, and my passion for the medium began to fade once more.

However, it had a hell of a comeback as the series progressed toward its epic conclusion, it’s been flanked by brilliant releases seemingly every year. Anime has come a long way even in the past decade, where countless new series are seen as potentially “the next big thing” and we have Attack on Titan to thank. I’ve since latched onto tons of new series and will likely never let go as the medium has claimed me as a lifelong fanboy.

Fans can look forward to other brilliant series from other studios like Oshi no Ko, Vinland Saga, and more. But the anime that put the medium arguably into its strongest position as a mainstream fandom was Attack on Titan, and we should never forget its legacy of quality and its fervent fanbase that kept it alive and thriving for a decade.

However, recent events have made fans wonder what happens to Genya in Demon Slayer, especially after a particularly harrowing moment in the third season. Be warned, spoilers are ahead!

What Happened to Genya in Demon Slayer?

Introduced in the first season of Demon Slayer as a vicious, arrogant foil to Tanjiro, Genya steps up and becomes a more prominent figure in Demon Slayer Season 3 during the Swordsmith Village arc. During a battle with Hantengu of the Twelve Kizuki, Genya is practically torn to shreds but somehow manages to stay standing. Things get even stranger when Genya’s eyes take on the iconic gold-and-black color scheme of a demon’s, leaving uninformed viewers to wonder what’s going on with him.

To cut straight to the point, Yes, Genya survives to the end of the battle when Hazenoki and it’s all thanks to the fact that he’s a Demon-Eater. Demon-eaters are humans who can take on the trait of demons by eating their flesh, granting them enhanced strength and regenerative capabilities. Genya is also a master of Repetitive Action, a mental exercise that allows Demon Slayers to resist pain by repeating a mantra to themselves.

Through these abilities, Genya can withstand enormous physical harm and fight just as well as his comrades. While taking on the trait of Demons leaves Genya vulnerable to sunlight, he manages to avoid the sun’s rays long enough to survive until Hazenoki is defeated.

Unfortunately, while Genya manages to escape the battle with Hazenoki relatively unscathed, things don’t go well for him afterward. If it was not apparent already, this is your last spoiler warning!

[SPOILER] Does Genya Die in Demon Slayer?

If you may have guessed already, Genya doesn’t die in the Swordsmith Village Arc, but he does die later on in the series. He survives for quite a while until Chapter 179, where he tragically passes away after heroically helping take down Kokushibo, Upper-Rank One. Kokushibo, as a character, has a fascinating connection to the Demon Slayer lore that warrants a separate piece, one of the most essential characters in the entire series.

Genya does get a happy epilogue, however. Genya, along with other key Demon Slayer characters who fought against the demons, was reincarnated in the modern era, and he happens to be a policeman, as shown in the time skip in Chapter 205, the final chapter of the manga. Whether this will also be Genya’s fate in the anime remains to be seen.

Berserk has five major story arcs, in an order that can confuse some readers. Upon reading the first few chapters you might find Guts to already have his Dragon Slayer sword in Chapter 1. The order of story arcs in Berserk as they have been released is as follows:

Black Swordsman Arc

The first Berserk story is set between the Golden Age Arc and the Conviction Arc. We see Guts, a violent and mysterious swordsman searching for the whereabouts of the “God Hand” and the apostles. Guts also makes an ally, an elf named Puck, after unintentionally freeing him (honestly the only thing that makes this arc “lighter”).

This arc gives us a glimpse into the dark times Guts had to go through in the Golden Age and what his objective for the later parts of the narrative is.

Golden Age Arc

Considered the best arc in the manga, it dives into Guts’ past and shows his time with the Band of the Falcon. Seeing how he changes after being around them and his relationship with Casta and Griffith is great. The latter is one of the most interesting elements of the story.

It’s mainly now you gotta take a step back and decide if you want to keep going. Saying the story is amazing doesn’t start to describe how incredible it is, but it gets much darker and more brutal. It has so many trigger warnings we wouldn’t even be able to list them all here.

Conviction Arc

It’s divided into three chapters: Lost Children (which was cut from the 2016 animation), Binding Chain, and Birth Ceremony. The arc features Guts’ fight against the apostle Rosine, who abducts and controls the children of a certain village. He also needs to fight the Holy Iron Chain Knights, an army that believes Guts is responsible for many horrible things happening in the kingdom.

Millennium Falcon Arc

It’s the longest arc in the series, with 131 chapters. Besides focusing on Griffith’s incarnation, it also marks the first time the Berserker Armor and the witch Schierke appear. The arc is divided into the Holy Evil War Chapter and the Falconia Chapter; starting now, the only way to get the whole story is by reading the manga, as the anime doesn’t adapt it in full.

Fantasia Arc

The current arc follows Guts and the rest of the Black Swordsman party journeying to Elfhelm to find the Elf King, who might be capable of restoring Casta’s mind. While that happens, we are also shown Rickert, one of the few survivors of the Band of the Falcon, doubting Griffith and forming his party.

The grim-dark atmosphere disappears during some parts, mainly while Guts is traveling with his party, which shows the development of the characters and feels like a good change of pace.

Eastern Exile Chapter (Possibly Part of Fantasia Arc)

The latest story arc portion of Fantasia in Berserk starts with Chapter 374’s conclusion, where Guts is in a broken, vulnerable state and Casca is taken captive to Griffith’s domain. The Kushan Empire has encircled Guts and his team on the Seahorse, and we can’t wait to see what comes next!
